NASCAR’s History

NASCAR is an American motorsport that has been around for over 70 years, and it has a rich history that has helped shape it into the popular and exciting sport it is today.

The sport was born out of the need to standardize the rules and regulations of stock car racing, and its roots can be traced back to the moonshine runners of the 1920s and early 1930s.

Moonshine runners were individuals who illegally produced and distributed alcohol, also known as moonshine, during the Prohibition era when alcohol was banned. They needed fast cars that were agile enough to evade the law, so they began modifying their vehicles with stronger engines, modified suspension systems, and reduced weight to make them as speedy as possible.

This led to impromptu races on backcountry roads, where drivers competed to see who had the fastest car and the most driving skills. These races became more organized over time, and eventually, the sport of stock car racing was born.

NASCAR was officially established in 1948, and the sport rapidly gained popularity in the southern United States, where it had its roots. However, it was not until the 1970s that NASCAR began to gain mainstream acceptance and global recognition. This was partly due to the emergence of big-name sponsors, such as Coca-Cola, who helped fund the sport and raised its profile.

The 1970s also saw the emergence of legendary drivers like Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, and Bobby Allison, who won multiple championships and helped propel the sport to new heights. These drivers were all former moonshine runners who had honed their driving skills on backcountry roads and developed a love for speed and agility that translated well to the track.


In the 1980s and 1990s, NASCAR became even more mainstream, with more races being broadcast on television and more fans tuning in to watch. The sport also began to expand outside of the traditional southern states, with races being held in places like California, New York, and Las Vegas.
